EDF - Sizewell

Land to the north of Sizewell was nominated by EDF Energy for a new nuclear power station in Spring 2009. The recent publication of the Government's draft Nuclear National Policy Statement (NPS) confirmed that the site was a suitable location and EDF Energy is now putting together plans for Sizewell C.

Sizewell is situated on the Suffolk coast approximately two miles from the town of Leiston and five miles north of the market town Aldeburgh. Along the East Anglian Coast to the north is the popular holiday destination at Southwold, which is around eight miles from the current power station.

The Government's consultation on the NPS will now provide an opportunity for people to comment on the list of sites published. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is holding a number of events in the Sizewell area at the beginning of December. The events will take place on 4th, 5th and 6th December with more information available at www.energynpsconsultation.decc.gov.uk|

The plan opposite shows the land that was nominated by EDF Energy into the Government's Strategic Siting Assessment (SSA). Not all of this land will be needed for the new power station, which will be located adjacent to the existing power station. Some land may be used for construction activities and can be restored once construction is complete. The land is fully owned by EDF Energy and has been assessed by Government as potentially suitable for a new nuclear power station.

Preparation of the plans is at an early stage and detail is currently being worked up before starting consultation with the public. This involves determining the precise location of the power station and associated buildings. This work will also define the boundaries for the land needed during the construction period.
