The demand for energy continues to grow. At the same time there is a real recognition that energy generation needs to be sustainable. Government policy has developed in this climate and nuclear power has been highlighted as playing an important role in supplying energy and also helping achieve tough carbon reduction targets.
The three key challenges facing the UK are the:
- Generation gap - the UK is facing an electricity generation shortage as coal and oil-fired power stations close, and older gas and nuclear power stations reach the end of their useful lives. Our demand for electricity is also still increasing.
- Carbon reduction - the Govenrment has ambitious targets for reducing the UK's carbon emissions. Closing old coal and oil-fired generation plants will help carbon reduction targets, but these plants will need to be replaced by new low carbon power sources, including new nuclear.
- Energy security - new nuclear power stations in the UK will help ensure a good mix of different energy sources that will help to increase the country's energy security.
EDF Energy has nominated its site at Sizewell in response to these challenges and the Government's encouragement of new nuclear development in the UK.
Sizewell has an added role to play as its location in the South and East of England correlates cloesly to the fastest area of growth in terms of energy demand. The location at Sizewell allows for sustainable delivery of energy to the growing number of homes and businesses in the South East and London.
