EDF Energy’s plans for nuclear new build will bring major benefits to the whole of the UK and to the local community. Expected benefits include:
- A clean, secure and affordable source of electricity for around five million homes
- Around 700 directly employed permanent jobs at the new power station
- Thousands of direct and indirect jobs for nearly a decade during the construction period
- A package of community benefits targeting education and training, local infrastructure, transport and the environment.
- Increased spending in the local economy, providing spin off opportunities for local businesses and local employment.
Protecting the local environment
EDF Energy is committed to maintaining the quality of the natural environment around the Sizewell site. Like much of the Suffolk Sandlings, Sizewell supports large numbers of adders, grass snakes, slowworms and common lizards and we are creating new areas of habitat for them as part of the new build plans. Starting in autumn 2009, we are establishing areas of new grassland near Upper Abbey and Sizewell Wents incorporating eight small wildlife ponds. We are also carrying out trials on the establishment of new heathland habitats
